I had the pleasure of going to see ‘The Mountain Top’ on Broadway which stars Angela Basset and Samuel L. Jackson with my mother and as usual I arrived just in time for the curtain to rise and the show to begin. Samuel L. Jackson who plays the late Dr. Martin Luther King grabbed the attention of the audience with his strong baritone voice, his tall presence and his over all swag. Angela Basset livened up the stage as she played a potty mouth angel sent from God himself to tempt, and take the life of Martin Luther King. The play proceeded with an eloquent conversation filled with curses, cigarettes, paranoia, sympathy and regret, all of which reflected a look into the unseen life of King.
I learned that Dr. King was a womanizer that couldn’t keep it in his pants, yet a family man that loved and cared for his wife and children. I learned that he smoked cigarettes and drank booze. I learned that King bought his wife flowers every time he left his home on his fight towards civil rights and freedom. And that the last time he left home before his untimely death he gave his wife fake flowers without even realizing that he would never return and those flowers would last forever.
Angela Bassets character was a very colorful one that may have offended some of the white people in the audience with her ‘Fuck the White Man’ line. I was tickled by her conversation with God on the phone and held back tears as she gave a look into the future before escorting King to his death. Overall I must say that the play was well written yet it lacked a diversity of scenes and cast members. There are literally two actors and two scenes in the entire play therefore if you are easily bored then you might be.
Taking place on April 3, 1968, THE MOUNTAINTOP is a gripping reimagining of events the night before the assassination of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. After delivering one of his most memorable speeches, an exhausted Dr. King (Samuel L. Jackson) retires to his room at the Lorraine Motel while a storm rages outside. When a mysterious stranger (Angela Bassett) arrives with some surprising news, King is forced to confront his destiny and his legacy to his people.
