Complexion Obsession DVD
Take a Journey through the industry to find out why there is an Obsession with our Complexion.

Why are you so upset that For Once a bunch of Black Girls Are not in a video being “video chicks” models. The majority of the women in the video were women of color its not like he is singing “Pretty Girls” then only showing chicks that look like Sarah Palin. I just am not understanding what young black educated women such as yourself want, on one hand you say why videos always make young black women sex symbols its degrading and on the other hand you say Wale should have more Black women in his Video becuase the title is Pretty Girls…Which One is it, Let me Know.
you should’ve filmed an ‘exclusive’ documentary exploring the blatant misogyny in mainstream hip-hop so you could have an excuse to shamelessly plug that in an aimless rant on that topic instead.
you rant with the zeal of a latina rosa parks arguing for her right to be the victim of racism just as much as the actual rosa parks.
THIS is your rallying cry? This is the video you want ‘boycotted’? Not another track that calls women “bitches” and “hoes”, but the one that refers to them as “pretty girls”? gtfo.
Joy,
I really enjoyed this commentary. You are dead on in your observations. It’s too bad because Wale apparently Tweeted about this and tried to disavow any responsibility for the casting. SMH. Why can’t folks just own up to an error in judgment and say they’ll work on improving the situation next time?
I’ve been to these casting sessions and you better believe the casting director is trying to please the artist and the record label. The artist definitely has say in the direction of the casting and can easily send a note to the casting director, i.e. “make sure we have some brown sistas in this video.” Better believe it will be done.
Thanks for shedding light on this problematic aspect of the industry.
This chick is buggin’ tha fuc out. She pressin’ tha Maino button all day in this video. STFUB translation Shut The Fuck Up Bitch !
Huh Huh Huh HATER !!!!!!!
In case your slow aSS don’t know what the Maino button is, that means she is has Hater Syndrome. Hi Hater
Nobody wants to hear your uneducated aSS talk about shit anywayS !!!!!!!!!!!!
Suggestion: Change your career, you look horrible on camera Joy. While your at it, change your name as well YOU are so not Joyful.
Don’t be madd your sorry aSS didn’t make the cut in this Wale video.
Joy, I agree with you 100% about how us black women are portrayed and all the media supports this portrayal. For you that states we have a problem with video chicks that may be true , but to Joy’s point the song is called “Pretty Girls” and the “Majority” of them are not black. This has certainly been an issue ever since black men started seeking white women and then other ethnics. Black men always seem to put and keep us black women at the bottom of the totum pole, I am one black women that feels sympathy for them in a way because as much S**t we take from ya’ll we are not worthy of anything but to be a baby momma. Me personally I am happy in my skin and although I have had my ups and downs with black men, the right one found me and knows my worth!!! And for you black men that think we are not as attractive as another race of women got some info for you, other races of men seem to love us……
Joy, your rant was empty for me, because your hair appears to be processed with a lighter color. That could communicate “lighter is near whiter”. Is your hair color natural? Wale’s video does not make a statement about black women. It’s a song about pretty girls. Recognize how stupid my question was about your hair color, enough said?
Listen this is fucking bullshyt. Pardon my french. Black women at first had a problem with the rappers having black females in videos shaking their ass. Claiming it was disgusting and degrading to women of the black culture. When all these women were strippers that actually shake their ass for a living. That’s besides the point.
Now the rappers say ok, no black girls in the videos because its degrading…were gonna have white and hispanic girls because sex sells and we need women in the video.
When they do that its still a problem because now the black women want more CAMERA TIME! You want to boycott his video because he doesnt have enough black women. But if he had enough black women and parade them around like sexual objects as he is doing with the white and latino women you would boycott his video as well claiming its degrading.
Please make up your mind BLACK WOMEN. And this is coming from a BLACK MAN! This is the ridiculous.
You just made yourself look like another angry black women, llok at this
Wale- My Sweetie (Official Video)
I dont think it was a cop out.. And your comment about telemundo was way out of line.. spanish WOMEN do listen to Wale and watch the videos.. on top of that SPANISH women are mixed with african as well!! SPANISH WOMEN have light and dark skin complexions.. And if he has a preference with light skinned women that is his personal preferece!! You need to leave him alone.. I love dark skinned men and im a light skinned woman.. am I wrong for preferring a dark man?? ……
Using Wale’s video as an indictment on black men’s preference just doesn’t cut. Your video was more than 6 minutes that you didn’t bother to go deep into the issues facing casting director or model agencies in the business. Essence magazine covered this a while back. Your video commentary sounds more reactionary more than anything else.
Note, Wale is not that big of an artist and the hip hop audience is much larger than you think. Yes, I understand where you’re coming from . . . but the issue is much more deeper and dare I say complex.
Finally, someone has said it intelligently. Any reader that feels your commentary is a rant is missing a very poignant part of their being – PRIDE. This is not about the objectification or exploitation of women, this is about the continuous degradation and disregard of Black women by Black men. I cannot conjur any other ethnic group that projects such an aggressive level of disdain for their women. I agree with your call – boycott all of the videos/music/television reality shows, etc that do not positively reflect Black women as a person to be desired for their beauty. Your stance is not about requiring a rapper or any other entertainer to substantiate your value or worth, this is for the next generation of young black girls that’s bombarded with images of non-black women as the ONLY standard of beauty.
I think the point of Joy Daily discussion is not about black females as “video chicks”. When a celebrity like Gabby Union is in a video she is not considered a video chick becuase of the way she is protrayed. I do believe that darker skin girls could be in the video, dressed nicely and classy and not be protrayed as “video chick”. Secondly, everyone knows, or at least it is currently a hot topic in the news that black men in the media tend to like the lighter skin females, just like how they like cars and lots of jewelry so that is what they display in their videos. I think that is the point Joy Daily is trying to make and I agree with her. I also believe other videos should be boycotted and have been, such as the ludacris video with the booty shaking and the credit card swipe. I just think, the video of discussion was pretty girls which is current.
The ultimate problem is that no one really cares anymore and morals and values are low. Some females won’t have an issue with this because they don’t care or don’t think it affect them which is shameful within itself. smh.
Sis I work in the media field so I understand the anger of women of color wanting a diversified image of black women/women of color. But on the real African,Latin, and South Asian women range in color from the darkest black to the lightest of light and the problem is seen on all video channels latin women aren’t all light ,nor asians either so the video channel and directors and artist across the board do choose light skinned women and that is wrong. But on the flip side of things when Wale released “My Sweetie” featuring Africans really gett’in in at a party where’s his support. From his album the track “Shades” did anyone request it on the radio? Most entertainers aren’t role models of our race but we can’t hollar when the do wrong and blog and whisper when they get it right. “Pretty Girls” song was a fail, and so was the video…My Sweetie video -Bang’in .The track “shades” reps his state of mind also.
I applaud you for standing up. I think people that are taking the negatives views from what you are saying are being ignorant because their not ‘trying’ to understand. I agree 100% that we need more African-american women in videos. Everytime I see a video its a whole bunch of other races and it’s confusing the black community. What are they trying to say ? We should all be light skin ? Yes, I do feel what you are saying and I’m glad SOMEBODY said something. Mannnnnny people agree with you, you have no idea.
Im glad you did a video calling this type of self hatred out. Thank you.
WOW, too actually sit there and post something like this means that you are hating on another women. Weather white, Spanish or black.. We are women, regardless. It shouldn’t be as much as the artist that you are putting on blast, did you consider who was the director or producer of the video should be put on blast. Primarily, they are the ones that set up the video before it even goes down. You are hating on another women and that is what needs to stop!
I have to really agree with the 2 comments above. Black women complain when they are being labeled or are being portrayed as women that are degraded and so forth. But the fact that not one “Bitch”, “Hoe” or “Slut” word was used in this video you are wanting to stop this man from feeding his family. Post something up as interesting as black men not being able to get a job in this day and age. Latino’s are being persecuted for doing jobs that Americas are willing to do. Please spare me the race card….. Don’t be upset, be happy that they were not put in comprising positions or labeled all types of name!
I do understand what the previous people are saying about whether we even “want” to be portrayed in these videos. But I also understand where Joy is coming from…we see it time and time again in these videos where brown and dark brown women are not seen. I too feel their should be a variety. Majority of these rappers are dark and they show other races of women and praise them but can give no love to someone who looks just like you . It’s crazy, shameful, and very embarrassing. These women know our own men do not find us attractive (as a whole) and they laugh and joice in it. But to be fair no one can be angry at black men for this they are conditioned…this is what’s “correct” “right” “white”.
I totally agree with both of them. As a black female I didn’t take offense to the fact Wale’s video wasn’t filled with a bunch of black girls half dressed shaking their ass. For once, we weren’t the ones degrading ourselves in the video. At the end of the day who cares about the video. If you like the song, then you like the song. The video shouldn’t have to turn you off from Wale’s talent. If Wale would of had all blacks girls in the video then the spanish and white people would of said he was racist. Did you ever think that maybe Wale didn’t put as many black girls in his video because he was planning on making My Sweetie…This is something ignorant to fight over. People don’t get to choose their skin complexion. When I popped out of my mom, I didn’t get to spin a color wheel and choose the shade I was going to be. I never understand why black people can’t be uplifting. Instead of congratulation Wale on being and African who made it to the mainstream ya”ll are bringing the man down. Let’s focus on that for your next video.
I dont think she should be that upset about it but I do see where she is coming from. Every time I see music artist of other races they always have women of the same race latin rappers have latin chicks in the video and rock n roll guys have white girls but when I see black artist they have every race but their own lol. Maybe a few darkskin girls. they have all these other bitches with fake ass and thats another problem fake ass Im tired of seeing all these latin and white girls with these fake unrealistic ass some black girls are starting to get them too its ugly and over done
Thank you for addressing this issue and showing the world how black women are both ignored and misjudged by our own people. The two people above me have failed to grasp the concept of what your tryingto say. I live in the UK and i am a african born British citizen. i am also a dark skinned woman. i find myself upset that when i look at these music videos i see a lot of beautiful women but no darkskinned women to whom i can relate. for me its not about getting rid of teh latinas and the white women, but about showing the world that beauty in women transencds through skin tones. Show the world that dark skinned women are just as beautiful as lightskinned women. If this was ever an opportnuity to show that black women are beautiful to then it would be in this “pretty girls” video, peope will condemn you for having an opinion, especially when its an opinion grounded in truth. black men need to show more appreciation for black women, we are nor white or latina but that doesnt mean that we are ugly, i myself have been very disappointed by wale, i feel that this was a wasted opportunity to show the differently, its not just wale jerimih (birthday sex), jason derulo (watcha say, in my head) both these artist as well dont feature dark skinned girls either. i feell your pain because its never about kicking out the latina but showing equality, soemthing that music industry lacks. These dark skinend artist are born of dark skinned women so should show homage to their roots and represent. Full Stop.
thank you for sharing your opinion and saying what many are to afraid to admit, i stumbled across you page through a link and i am glad i have. i look forward to hearing more from you.
I feel like it shouldn’t matter what the complexion of their skin tone is. People need to stop focusing on being light skin or dark skin and start focusing on black people as a whole. There are light skin black woman out there. Just because your dark skin doesn’t mean you should be considered more black than the rest of us. I’m getting really sick of this issue. My friends mother doesn’t like light skinned people cause she thinks we think that were cute. She thinks dark skin woman have better features than light skins which is the most ignorant crap I have ever heard in my life. There are good looking woman in all colors, shapes and sizes. It has nothing to do with skin tone. This issue is getting out of hand. I feel like this issue of complexion is just like racism. The blacks versus the whites. Now it’s the dark skin versus the light skin. I’ve even seen a flyer for a party thrown were they had light skins versus the dark skins. The whole idea of it is disgusting. This shouldn’t even have been the issue of the video. The issue should have been why is the song called “Pretty Girls” and they have on skimpy clothes. People need to open up theire eyes a lot wider than they have and look at the real issue. Besides there are way worse problems going on in the world right now.
ok. you should really listen to all his songs
especially Shades
he talks about the bullshit you’re complaining about
Pre-occupied with race:
In your documentary (or whatever it is you’ve been working on) you need to talk to me. A different opinion always adds credibility because you confront your critics.
Now, are you out of your mind ? I mean, I see you point, but there are so many contradictions to your argument, I don’t know where to start !
1. If black women base their self-esteem by what they see in videos, then we got major issues. Bottom line, mass media should never be a benchmark for how a certain group of people feel about themselves, and if they make it so, then this means we need to raise our kids with more pride of themselves. It’s not Wale’s job to make “dark-skinned black women” feel valued in this society. How dare you put that responsibility on him !
2. Saw you story on mediatakeout.com. A site that promotes and makes money off of black peoples pre-occupation with race and skin color. They used your story to perpetuate it even more. A cause you yourself claim to be against. And what happens ? A group of people I call “defenders of the dark-skinned” come out of the wood works, and in a feeble attempt to defend the virtues of “dark black women are beautiful” end up disparaging light-skinned black people in the process ??? What kind of ignorant brand of self hate is this ? Black people need to stop caring what race someone is or how light this black person is period ! Including you.
3. Your issue seems to be that society in general values non-black features. Fine, I get that. But people have the right to have a preference, and freedom of choice permits that larger groups of people are gonna like 1 thing over another, period. More people like vanilla than they like chocolate. And so what ! Are you to then say “It’s wrong that so many people like vanilla ? And that some of you need to start liking chocolate” ?
4. You said your jamaican ? Well I am also jamaican, and you should know that jamaica is made up of more than the black race ! We have white, chinese, and indian also. The countries national motto is “Out of many, one people”. Jamaica is not just african, and when you call it that, you disparage all the other races that make up who jamaica is. I have white jamaican in my family, and that black parts are very light-skinned. Are they less Jamaican because they are somewhat “diluted” from their African heritage ? Of course not.
5. Lastly, I look at your features and you look kinda mixed too ? Either you have “good hair”, or you have a weave, which in my opinion, is a sistas way of having the naturally long and easily manageable hair of the mixed breed and Spanish women you are railing against. Using your argument, you and every black women out there with typical black nappy hair are sellouts because they don’t embrace their natural black hair ?
In closing, I do want to acknowledge so of the valid feelings you have. I get it. Black men who get money are always gravitating toward light, mixed, Spanish, white, or other kind of woman. We brothas have damn near made that our standard of beauty. And yes, our tastes are somewhat shaped by mass media and public opinion. Light-skinned people have it a little easier because white society feels more comfortable with them, than with our darker skinned sistas and brothas. Black men, rich or not, are dating non-black women in droves ! (I also have a deep theory on that, but that’s a separate conversation. Holla at me for my input) I’m sure this has way more to do with how sistas feel about themselves than any effect of some music videos.
Bottom line, we (black folks) need to get over this pre-occupation with race immediately and focus on fixing what’s wrong in our society. We have way more pressing issues that are destroying us. The black family unit is almost non-existent, Out-of-wedlock birth, crime, etc.
know why mediatakeout didnt give u no props on this bum ass opinion piece? NO ONE, and im mean NO ONE gets to race bait before MTO, u hear me, NO ONE! and take that weave/and or perm out your head before u throw another black person under the bus not for your own racist opinion(u judg, but just for the web hits? last time im on this bum-ass site, promise!
I resent the comment you made about white and spanish girls tanning to be a dark complextion. We don’t tan to be “black”, we simply just want to get a bronze glow. I hear this comment come from many black women and it really gets me upset. The counter comment to that would be us saying that black women try to have our hair by relaxing it or buying weave. That would surely hit a sore note with some women. So please don’t go around using that comment that white and spanish women tanning to be dark like black women because that’s not true.
Thanks.
